About Diabetes

What are your risks?
Although tooth and gum problems can happen to anyone, if you have diabetes, you are at increased risk for oral infections and gum disease. However, many people are unaware that they even have diabetes. A routine dental exam can uncover the presence of diabetes through the appearance of tell-tale signs of the disease in the mouth. Early detection is important because, if left untreated, diabetes can make you prone to other mouth problems, such as fungal infections, poor healing and dry mouth.
There is much you can do to prevent or slow the progression of periodontal disease and other oral health problems caused by diabetes. Good at-home oral hygiene and preventive oral health care, regular professional cleanings and dental checkups are a must. And always let your dentist know if you have been diagnosed with diabetes.
